HISTORY & ORGANIZATION The Arkansas Pharmacists Association (APA) was founded in 1882 as the professional association for the profession of pharmacy in Arkansas. The Association represents over 2,000 members consisting of pharmacists, pharmacy students and members of the industry who support the objectives of the Association. Members are kept abreast of pertinent healthcare issues and trends through the quarterly journal, newsletters and the APA web page. APA also provides its members with opportunities for professional growth through continuing education programs, District Meetings and an Annual State Convention. Legislative advocacy at both the state and federal levels are another important focus of APA. Overall, the Arkansas Pharmacists Association strives to enhance the practice of pharmacy and to improve public health through rational cost-effective drug therapy and outcomes-oriented drug therapy management. APA Mission ♦ The mission of this Association shall be to promote the public health and welfare; to unite the eligible practitioners of pharmacy for mutual encouragement, assistance and improvement; to develop, maintain and encourage compliance with a Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct which will serve as a guide for the professional conduct of the Membership and provide for the delivery of a professionally acceptable level of comprehensive pharmaceutical services; to provide for the continuing education of the membership; to assure the viability of the profession; to assist the University of Arkansas College of Pharmacy in its effort to achieve and maintain academic excellence; to establish viable liaisons with other health related professions and organizations in order to provide for mutual assistance; and unless it is contrary to good public policy, to serve the best interest of the membership. Districts & Areas ♦ APA divides Arkansas into eight (8) Districts: Northwest District, White River District, East District, Western District, West Central District, Central District, Southwest District, Southeast District. Each of the Districts forms the grassroots network of the Association through their meetings and activities. In addition, APA divides the state into four (4) Areas. The president from each District and an elected representative from each Area serve on the APA Board of Directors. Committees ♦ APA encourages members to volunteer to participate in the leadership and direction of their profession through service on policy and/or special committees. Policy committees of APA include the Policy Committees on Organizational Affairs, Professional Affairs & Ethical Practices, Public Affairs and Third Party Issues. In some instances, Special Committees are formed to deal with a single issue or task. The duration of Special Committees is dependent on the completion of its task. By participating on a committee, the member takes an active role in the betterment of pharmacy and healthcare. Click here to see an APA district map. |
